Medicare Supplement Plans

While Original Medicare covers many costs related to healthcare services and supplies, there are gaps in the plan that can be covered by supplemental insurance plans. These Medicare Supplement Plans are provided by private companies.

It’s important to note that these plans don’t work like most insurance policies. A supplemental plan doesn’t actually cover health benefits – instead, it covers the costs that you are responsible to pay outside of your Medicare coverage.

What is Covered by a Medicare Supplement Plan?

The specific coverage depends on the type of supplemental plan that you choose. A supplemental insurance policy can cover some of the out-of-pocket health care costs, such as:

Hospital or nursing facility costs after you use all available Medicare-covered days

Medical care outside the US

Keep in mind that a Medicare supplement plan does not provide Part D prescription drug coverage. So, you will need an additional plan for Part D.
