GETTING STARTED

Medicare Basics

Medicare is a federal program offering health insurance for people who meet certain requirements, such as:

  • 65 or older
  • Younger people with disabilities
  • Patients with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), requiring a transplant or dialysis

People who are Medicare-eligible can choose to access Medicare benefits through the Original Medicare coverage, a service from the federal government directly. Another option is to choose a Medicare Advantage Plan, which is private insurance coverage through companies that contract with the federal government for Medicare coverage.

The Original Medicare program provides coverage for most doctors and hospitals in the United States. With Medicare Advantage Plans, network restrictions are in place. But these Medicare Advantage Plans often come with additional services not offered through Original Medicare, such as dental or vision services.
